SAP Basis is vast, complex and almost invisible when it’s working correctly – and it’s absolutely crucial to your business. All the administration and maintenance tasks throughout your SAP landscape are handled by SAP Basis, from overseeing users, to overseeing the flow of data between different divisions of your company, to fixing the trickiest errors.

Because of its complexity – and its importance to core business processes – SAP Basis administration is no field for mere button pushers. Your company needs an SAP Basis support team with a deep understanding of both the technical and strategic side of your SAP system and business, along with the ability to coordinate between the IT department and the executive layer. Here are four reasons why your business needs a strong, effective, and efficient SAP Basis support team:

1. SAP requires lots of care and feeding. The complexity and time commitment required for SAP Basis support can vary greatly from use case to use case, but even a relatively small SAP landscape requires daily maintenance to stop minor issues from growing into major problems.A typical company will have several separate SAP systems running for production, development, testing and training, and perhaps a high-availability system mirroring production on top of everything else. Admins will have to keep all of these systems updated, optimized and communicating with each other. They’ll need to perform daily backups and verify their integrity, and safely install new patches and updates.

SAP Basis support will also have to examine system logs for a wide variety of application, OS and hardware issues every day. Any warning, error, security notification, termination or other unusual event could indicate a serious issue that could disrupt system functioning if left unchecked. They’ll also have to look for terminated jobs and updates, check for dumps and old locks, examine performance statistics for the system and perform a security check. They’ll have to examine the system on multiple levels, from fine-tuning databases to detailed performance monitoring. And that’s just a small sample of the daily tasks necessary to keep everything running smoothly.

The problem is, SAP Basis support doesn’t always fit into a 9-to-5 schedule. When the system sends out an alert, or the users can’t access the system, your SAP administrators need to be able to act immediately. And they won’t know if it’s a simple fix or an issue requiring hours of research until they dive into it. And, if your SAP Basis administrator is sick, you can’t just go grab a consultant, either. Your SAP landscape is as unique as your business, and no two competitive businesses are exactly alike. A full understanding of what makes your SAP system tick takes time — time you won’t have if something breaks when you can’t get ahold of your SAP Basis tech.

Symmetry provides at least two SAP Basis support staff to each client — highly qualified technicians who will know your system inside and out. When something breaks, you won’t be directed to a phone bank; you’ll be able to contact them directly whenever you need them. That means 24-hour direct access to multiple SAP Basis professionals for less than the cost of hiring one in-house technician.

2. SAP Basis is the glue that holds your IT together. Your organization may have dozens of SAP systems, but they all depend on SAP Basis. Your SAP ecosystem may run on a variation of operating systems, utilize multiple database platforms, and use a unique architecture to move data across the country and the world.

SAP is the tool that allows the different parts of your company to talk to each other. Fulfillment centers can’t ship products or order new inventory without information about customer orders; marketing departments can’t track conversions or calculate ROI without access to sales data; and executives can’t make sound business decisions without information from across the organization. Unless information flows correctly across the enterprise, no one can do their job.

Administering the software that facilitates this flow of information takes a unique mindset. A lot of SAP Basis professionals are strong technically, but don’t fully understand how a business is run and how the business units work together. They might be great at fixing errors or tweaking performance, but they’ll struggle to provide the guidance you need, and your business will suffer.

Symmetry is unique in that it focuses on training analytics, foresight and leadership skills along with technical abilities. Our SAP Basis support and managed services staff aren’t just technicians and button pushers — they’re also people who understand how to work with businesses to accomplish strategic aims.

3. SAP Basis support is the lynchpin of your IT team. In a small company, a single SAP Basis administrator may manage the whole system, from the OS to the application layer. In a large organization, however, an SAP Basis support team might compliment dozens of IT professionals, including server engineers, developers, IT security pros and other administrative staff.

In either case, your SAP Basis support team needs to be comfortable in a leadership role, with the organizational and people skills to coordinate with other IT professionals. SAP Basis admins need to direct server engineers and database engineers, coordinate with support staff to monitor end user complaints and feedback, keep in touch with security staff to prevent breaches and control access, and work alongside the functional staff on both new initiatives and system support.

Leadership is particularly important in big projects. Imagine what goes into an SAP HANA migration from an overseas server to an onshore SAP HANA cloud: the new system needs to be built and tested, the data needs to be securely backed up and transferred while the source system is still running and collecting data. The new data that has been added during that process needs to be transferred and, finally, the end users need to be switched to the new system, all with minimal disruption. And that doesn’t even touch on all the pre-launch training and tweaking required.

Symmetry’s SAP Basis support staff are skilled at leading a complete IT team; after all, we do it every day. Our long-term, U.S.-based employees provide a complete suite of cloud and hosting solutions, and IT managed services across industries. Whether you’re looking for someone to train your in-house SAP Basis support leader, or a partner to build and run a private managed cloud, we’re up for the job.

4. SAP Basis support can help you anticipate future needs. No one knows your system better than your SAP Basis admins. They learn your SAP landscape inside and out, including available resources, workload, and rate of growth. When your cloud and IT infrastructure needs an upgrade, they’ll be the first to know.

Yet most SAP Basis support staff don’t know how to talk to executives, and most companies never give them the chance. Rather than planning infrastructure upgrades to support continued growth, organizations get caught by surprise when things start slowing down. By then, quarterly goals have been set and budgets have been planned out. Executives have to either waste time and good will by scheduling emergency board meetings, or else hope the system can limp along until the next quarter.

Our SAP Basis support staff are trained to make sure our customers are moving in the right direction. Our consultants are equally comfortable speaking tech lingo to internal IT and discussing SAP Implementations, upgrades and migrations with executives. We’ll anticipate growth, so you’ll always have enough compute to support your core business processes — and because our customers only pay for the resources they’re using, you won’t have to invest in expensive IT infrastructure ahead of time.
