SAP Basis RequirementsWe’re not talking about parameters, we’re talking about people.

Those rare SAP Basis Administrators who are given the time and the resources to keep their skills updated within the larger IT organization are the lucky ones. We sit down with one of our Symmetry SAP Basis experts to delineate the SAP Basis Requirements you need to ensure you’re meeting customer requirements and using the SAP ecosystem to full effect.

When you support SAP Basis requirements in either non-production or production environments, or both, you’ll need full command of system functionality. You’re responsible for parameter changes, reorganizations, performance, patch application, upgrades and/or availability in the SAP ecosystem in addition to troubleshooting and monitoring systems on a regular basis.

SAP Technical Lead, Jacob Gagas, is one of our premier SAP Basis professionals with over 12 years of SAP Basis experience and has or is supporting more than 50 SAP customers across the globe. He is an expert in SAP user experience offerings like Fiori, Personas, SAP GUI, WEBGUI, and NetWeaver Business Client. He has supported multiple new installations, involving SAP Best Practice configuration, release upgrades, Enhancement Pack upgrades, OS/DB migrations, combined upgrades, and Unicode conversions (CUUC) among many others. Here, Jacob gives us an on-the-ground look at SAP Basis requirements for the best possible results.

Q: What would you want to tell people about SAP Basis Requirements if you could?

A: I’ve been doing this a long time, so one of the main things I want to tell people is: Don’t use your SAP Basis skills as a “check-off box” when planning for the array of SAP skills on staff. Remember, your business sponsors are your customers; even if their external customers seem to own the collective checkbook. Doing SAP Basis right can literally change the way the rest of your company uses your ERP system and really help them appreciate what you do.

Q:  How can using SAP Basis correctly change the way you use ERP?

A: The area of SAP that is “Basis” represents the core of any SAP application. Your basis team should be experts in the operating system, database, in addition to the SAP technology stacks that are in use within your organization. This broad skillset is invaluable when troubleshooting severe performance issues, recovering from system outages or disaster situations, or performing major or even routine system maintenance. By having an expert SAP Basis team in your corner, you’ll be able to keep your systems updated, secure, and performing at the full potential.

Q: I’m sure there are a lot of experts on staff, yet there are several consultancies doing what you do. So, why the Symmetry team on SAP Basis?

A: I think, more than anything, the combined years of experience brought to the table by our SAP and IT professionals boosts the efficiency of any of our customers’ day-to-day systems support. We’ve worked with many customers that employ outstanding internal IT professionals, but often, their expertise falls short when it comes to designing and implementing the right solutions to host or even just support SAP workloads. Symmetry can plug its expertise into these situations, evaluate the solutions in place and make recommendations without second guessing ourselves.

What differentiates Symmetry from other providers is that we also have world-class expertise in hosting SAP and other computing workloads that we can bolt-on to our SAP technical consulting solutions. Combined, the skillsets from our SAP technical consulting and hosting teams allow us to assist customers with not only the core SAP technical application life-cycle tasks (installs, upgrades, migrations, etc.), but also design solutions that solve today’s challenging infrastructure questions that require expertise in public and private cloud, hardware sizing, virtualization platforms, backup/disaster recovery/high-availability solutions, networking, cyber-security and more.

Q: How can we take SAP Basis Requirements to the next level and ensure robust SAP teams?

A: We see a lot of teams doing things on a trial and error basis and wasting time and effort, whereas when we come in, we can use our expertise almost immediately and seamlessly partner with their team and take Basis to the next level. We always encourage being adopted as an extension of our customer’s team by participating in regularly scheduled conference calls and during troubleshooting sessions via screen share. I have seen cases where Symmetry has engaged in strategic SAP life-cycle planning and really brought incredible value throughout that exercise.

Q: Do you review administrative decisions regularly with clients or are you mostly hands-off until needed?

A: As a matter of course, we present periodic business reviews of the systems and applications that we support. We often uncover several areas for improvement during these. At the end of the day, many SAP Basis Administrators and their leaders thank us for discovering value-adds within the system. Clients may be solid technical administrators doing the best they can with the time they have to work around the issues in their environment. With added resources like Symmetry, they are able to take on actual fixes as well as add efficiencies. We help them resolve their problems rather than manage around them.

Q: Do you want to leave us with a message for those concerned about current SAP Basis Requirements being covered?

A: We want our customers to view us as thought leaders and never hesitate to get us involved in any of their SAP needs. That can look like any variety of engagement – they just need to discuss it with us. From a month or two to a multiple of years, we’ve brought value in every single instance I’ve worked on. I think that’s saying a lot.
