As the end of support for SAP ECC looms, the option of migrating to SAP…
Your SAP landscape is a complex, one-of-a-kind machine. Its architecture and application stack may be the product of choices made over years, or even decades. To upgrade it to SAP HANA, you’ll need a plan designed around your assets and goals. You’ll have to decide on SAP business Suite vs. S/4HANA, weigh the cost benefits of the SAP HANA Cloudagainst your onsite investments, and make hundreds of other decisions.
But there are a number of applications that fall outside SAP HANA use cases. Depending on your landscape, you may be able to get the speed and other advantages of SAP HANA, while maximizing value by moving some applications to SAP ASE.
SAP HANA Use Cases: The Need for Speed
SAP HANA migration will yield the greatest benefits for computationally demanding applications, such as SAP ERP or SAP BW. SAP HANA is a fully in-memory database — that is, it keeps everything in memory where it can be accessed immediately, without the comparatively slow process of searching through disk storage.
This is good for high transactional applications — applications that have to process many simple tasks very quickly. A classic example is ecommerce. Businesses may need to process orders for hundreds or even thousands of customers simultaneously without introducing delays or overloading the system.
On the other end, there are compelling SAP HANA use cases for high analytical applications — applications that need to do complex operations involving lots of data from many different sources. Traditional databases are hampered by the fact that they can only hold a small portion of their data in memory at any time. This drastically increases the time it takes to comb through multiple datasets. HANA allows applications like SAP BPC to quickly gain actionable insights from large amounts of data — in part because it has everything loaded in memory.
SAP ASE vs. SAP HANA: Use Cases
SAP HANA won’t necessarily increase performance for smaller integration products like SAP PI/PO or NetWeaver Gateway. These products pass data between applications — a task that usually isn’t computationally demanding enough to require an SAP HANA migration.
These smaller products can all be run on the SAP ASE database, which is provided at no additional cost when you purchase HANA from SAP. In many cases, this can control costs, allow you to make better use of existing assets or even reduce the complexity of major SAP implementations, upgrades and migrations.
