SAP certification refers to a range of credentials that demonstrate skills across the SAP landscape. There are three SAP certification levels, which students must complete in order: Associate, Specialist and Professional. All certifications require passing one or more rigorous exams in a testing facility. Test preparation requires both coursework and extensive hands-on SAP experience.

What is SAP Certification: Key Certifications

SAP is an ever changing landscape, and the training required to operate it is constantly evolving and expanding. However, most SAP certifications can be placed in two broad categories: day-to-day support and project work.

The most important day-to-day support training is the SAP Certified Technology Associate in System Administration certification, which is broken down by database type. For example, a consultant could specialize in running SAP on Microsoft SQL DB with an SAP Certified Technology Associate-System Administration (MS SQL) certification. The certification would cover SAP support tasks like performing SAP installations, changing operation modes, and scheduling batch jobs, along with MS SQL server administration.

A key SAP certification for project work is the SAP Certified Technology Associate – OS/DB Migration for SAP NetWeaver. It trains consultants to do heterogeneous migrations (moving to a different database and/or OS). SAP HANA® migration requires the SAP Certified Technology Specialist – SAP HANA Installationcertification — a two-exam certification that is one of the toughest in the industry. Hardware sizing and configuration also require SAP certifications.

There are also provider SAP certifications that show that a company is able to provide a whole set of skills, necessary for a complete SAP solution.

Why is SAP Certification Important?

SAP certification is always a good sign, but for SAP hosting and many SAP projects it is required by SAP. For example, technicians need a migration key for a heterogeneous migration, which can’t be obtained without logging their certification credentials.

Many provider certifications are rare, since they require a complete set of individual SAP certifications. For example, SAP HANA hosting providers need to be certified in SAP HANA hosting, which requires consultants that have multiple certifications in HANA.

Symmetry is one of only a handful of IT managed services companies qualified as an SAP Certified Provider of Hosting Services, SAP Certified Provider of Cloud Services and SAP-Certified Provider of SAP HANA Operations Services. That allows us to offer SAP hosting, SAP cloud hosting and SAP HANA cloud along with on-premises operation.

How Do IT Professionals Prepare for SAP Certification?

There are a variety of SAP training options for certification. Symmetry consultants go through Sym-U, a program built, developed and taught by our Senior SAP Basis Consultants. This program ensures our consultants are prepped and ready for their SAP Certified Technology Associate in System Administration certification.

Good SAP services require skills beyond SAP certification. A Basis administrator, for example, needs to have a solid understanding of the whole IT ecosystem — not just the part they’re responsible for. If something goes wrong with the OS, the DR replication software or the network gear, SAP Basis support and managed services professionals need to be able to know where the issue resides and how to clearly communicate with the parties responsible.

Symmetry does continuous training, using classrooms, mentoring and informal presentations. We have ongoing brown bag lunches where a consultant who recently ran into an unknown issue can explain what they’ve learned so other consultants will be able to offer quick resolution if they run into the same problem.

SAP Certification is Only the Beginning.

The SAP landscape covers a tremendous range of hardware, software and use cases. An SAP team needs to continuously grow, learn and evolve to meet the demands of business. Symmetry recruits the best and brightest and puts them through the most rigorous training program in the industry, to ensure superior performance for our clients. Contact us to learn how our IT solutions can help you be the best.
