Segregation of Duties is one of those business concepts that’s a bit abstract, but the…
We realise it’s difficult to keep up with SAP certifications, especially in small- or medium-sized businesses that may have high turnover but low headcount for IT. SAP HANA certification requires hours of effort; however, those who become certified report that their abilities deepen and that they feel more effective.
Individuals who want to work on an SAP team running HANA serve as conduits to speed up data processing and analytics for the business, creating a strategic engine that can truly support growth, yet will certification take up too much time for what it is worth?
What certified SAP HANA experts do
SAP HANA certified professionals are trained to help with all stages of execution, such as licensing, migrations, implementations, hosting, continued maintenance and administrative management. Because each business uses its SAP HANA landscape according to its specific needs and each landscape is different, the certification focuses, instead, on best practices in the above listed areas. Many career paths in HANA support require some minimum level of technical certification for all candidates applying.
Types of SAP HANA Certification
SAP HANA Certifications include Development Associate, Technology Associate and Application Associate. The SAP Development Associate for SAP HANA exam, for example, consists of 80 questions that presuppose a working knowledge of SAP HANA because “to ensure success, SAP recommends combining education courses and hands-on experience to prepare for your certification exam as questions will test your ability to apply the knowledge you have gained in training”.
SAP also lets those certified know when their certifications become outdated and publishes a list of valid certifications. Those certified can go to a credential management site to publish certification credentials and obtain logos and certificates.
Recommended learning path
Many of those who already work in HANA have certifications for SAP, but SAP recommends a specific learning path for those who sat their certification exams a long time ago based on a different edition and/or are new to SAP HANA but have years of SAP experience.
Those for whom SAP HANA is their first certification exam will need to register on the SAP training site. They receive an S-User account to associate with the Pearson VUE SAP testing website. Afterwards, SAP requires prospective certification students to buy a testing voucher from them before registering on Pearson. Keep in mind, many wait a few days for this and also must plan where to sit the test at an available Pearson facility.
Much of the curriculum to prepare for the test is available online in Cloud-based, live classrooms called SAP Live Access Training that run from about £1,100 to almost £3,800 for each course. SAP HANA certification training is relevant for those using BW, Administration, Programming for Development, and more.
While choosing specific SAP HANA edition exams, certificate seekers must be aware that Support Pack Stacks (SPS) that are released each year will be included in the exam, as well. Here’s an SAP HANA certification list of included topics:
- System Architecture
- Scale Out Scenarios: including use-cases
- Hardware and Operating System
- System Landscape Planning: including Transport management – CTS+, HTC (HANA Transport Container), HALM (HANA Application Lifecycle Manager)
- High Availability and Disaster Tolerance
- Installation, Uninstall Procedures, Upgrade
- Data Provisioning
- Backup and Recovery
- Database Migration to SAP HANA
- SAP HANA Monitoring: HANA Cockpit, SAP DBACOCKPIT, SAP Solution Manager

- Administration Tools: HANA Studio, HDBCLM/HDBCLMGUI, HLM (HANA Lifecycle Manager)

You need less than 60 per cent to pass the certification exams, but many who take the certifications report that many questions require a high level of comfort with tools, screens, tabs and/or options – in fact, those who are certified have often spent upwards of 5–6 hours on each of the more in-depth topic areas.
Prior to beginning certification, SAP recommends online or in-person classes, such as SAP HANA Introduction, Installation and Operations, Authorisation, Security and Scenarios, Migration to SAP HANA using DMP, as well as an overview course, SAP NetWeaver AS DB Operation (SAP HANA).
What certification means in practice
SAP HANA technologies require certified SAP experts to support the platform’s potential. Those certified in SAP HANA make migration easier for most because they understand the environment and can size and migrate current systems to SAP HANA safely and efficiently.
Those hosting and managing a data centre that includes multiple platforms and integrates third-party applications with SAP HANA should consider only certified experts for this task. While those on the ground in worldwide IT organisations might wince at the prospect of SAP HANA certification, those who know what the certification means in practice for maximising the value of the landscape might welcome the challenge.
